Bucyrus is a city in Crawford County, Ohio, and its county seat. With a population of about 12,000, the city is the largest in Crawfor County.
Bucyrus is most famous for being the "Bratwurst Capital of America" and hosting the massive annual Bucyrus Bratwurst Festival every August.
The origin of the name Bucyrus is not certain. It was given by James Kilbourne, who laid out the town in 1821. One theory is that the name Bucyrus is derived from the "beautiful" coupled with the name of Cyrus the Great, founder of the Persian Empire. An alternate theory is that the city was named after Busiris, a city of ancient Egypt.
The beautiful courthouse was built in 1856, with O. S. Kinney of Cleveland as architect. The building is a three-storied buff colored rusticated sandstone blocks structure. The bottom story is partially underground and contains small square windows. The south front has a large portico with six high Corinthian columns which support the entablature and pediment above. A green colored balustrade runs along the roof line. On the roof is a high square tower with columns and round drum with copper colored dome at the top which in turn supports a small lantern.
